VPNs and China: what we can and can't tell you (2026)

China's Great Firewall filters VPN traffic. What is publicly known, why TUKTUKVPN makes no claim about connecting from inside China, what to sort out before a trip, and where travel eSIMs fit.

VPNs and China: what we can and can't tell you (2026)

People ask us whether a VPN can be used in China. The honest answer starts with what we don't know: we have not measured TUKTUKVPN from inside China, and we make no claim about connecting from there. China's filtering system — the one the world calls the Great Firewall — changes constantly, so even a single test on one day would say little about the next.

What is publicly known

China's Great Firewall combines deep packet inspection (DPI), DNS poisoning, connection resets and active probing of suspected servers. Plain WireGuard and OpenVPN are widely reported to be detected and blocked there, because their traffic has recognisable patterns. China also permits only state-approved VPNs, and TUKTUKVPN is not available on the App Store in mainland China.

TUKTUKVPN offers VLESS+Reality, whose traffic looks like ordinary HTTPS, alongside Hysteria2 and WireGuard/AmneziaWG, and the app switches between them automatically. That describes the protocols; it is not evidence about Chinese networks. For the mechanics of each protocol family, the plain-language protocol guide covers all three.

Sort things out before you fly

Many registration and download pages — most VPN providers' included — are unreachable from inside China. If you intend to try any VPN there, do the setup at home:

  1. Get your plan active and the app installed before you leave.
  2. Connect at least once at home, so the app has its current configuration.
  3. Note a support contact that doesn't depend on reaching the main website.

Even then, we can't tell you whether TUKTUKVPN will connect from inside China.

What about travel eSIMs? An honest answer

A popular piece of advice says tourists can skip the VPN and use a travel eSIM (roaming through a foreign network). That is partly true, and worth stating completely: a foreign eSIM's roaming traffic exits the internet in the SIM's home country, so for a short trip on mobile data it is the convenient option.

Where the eSIM doesn't help: whenever you are on Wi-Fi (hotels, offices, universities — Wi-Fi traffic does not ride the roaming path), when a longer stay makes roaming costs unreasonable, or when you carry a Chinese SIM for local apps and SMS.

Before you travel

  • China's filtering changes constantly, and China permits only state-approved VPNs — check the rules that apply to you.
  • We have not measured TUKTUKVPN from inside China and make no claim about connecting from there.
  • If you intend to try a VPN, set it up and test it before you fly — many registration pages are unreachable from inside.
  • A travel eSIM covers the tourist-on-mobile-data case, but not Wi-Fi.
